To streamline and improve overall operations, Louisiana-based tugboat towing company E.N. Bisso & Son, Inc. converted to a cloud-based software management system. The company offers a full range of services, including docking and undocking of large ocean vessels, other towing services and escort services, as necessary. E.N. Bisso & Son utilizes various technologies for invoicing, fleet management and other components of its business. To make these systems run more smoothly, the company converted to a cloud-based management system. The network administrator, Michael Collins, shares details of the transition.

By switching to a cloud-based system, the company was able to free up more of Collins’s time. “Tug boats need application support the same as any other organization. E.N. Bisso is using an invoicing system, as well as tracking and vessel maintenance applications, which are now all hosted on servers in the cloud. Since I am essentially a one man IT shop, these hosted applications in the cloud free up a significant amount of my time by not only removing the burden of having to configure, deploy, manage and maintain these applications, but also by eliminating paperwork.”

The company also uses the cloud-based system to manage its satellite offices. Collins states, “The company decided to consolidate its corporate and satellite office networks into one location, to provide better support for fleet management and corporate services. Working with Venyu, E.N. Bisso hosted half of their physical servers in a colocation environment, with virtual machines running in the cloud. This new hosted environment utilized VMware cloud and vCloud Director to manage the entire service from any internet connection. The flexible cloud-based services allowed the company to continue virtualizing physical devices, benefiting me by relieving time constraints.

A cloud-based system can make operations run smoothly for many small businesses. Cloud systems make it easier to store and manage data and can be an excellent tool for companies that employ people in satellite offices or those whose employees work from home.
