Alan Brenham is an author and owner of Brenham Publishing. As the sole author for Brenham Publishing, Brenham writes mystery and thriller fiction novels which are contracted to traditional publisher Black Opal Books. The next novel is in the process of being written, and additional stories are in the planning stages.
Brenham is a former law enforcement officer (LEO) and a licensed attorney with both prosecutorial and criminal defense experience, who uses knowledge gleaned from years of experience in both fields to create the stories. His years spent with the state prison and parole agency have also contributed to the wealth of experience used to craft the stories.
Brenham shares the challenges of trying to increase sales in the publishing business and also offers insight as to how he overcame the challenges.

What has been the biggest challenge you have had in your business?
The biggest challenge as an author is marketing and promotion. Competition among authors has grown with the proliferation of self-publishing and the influx of authors with traditional publishing houses.
What have you implemented to overcome that challenge?
The key to my marketing-promotion campaign was to familiarize readers with who Alan Brenham is and the stories he writes by establishment of an author brand and platform. I made use of website content and social media presence with LinkedIn, Facebook, Google+ and Twitter. Each played a very important role in the building of my platform and in marketing-promotion strategies. The novels secured positive reviews and awards certainly didn’t hinder marketing efforts.
National author organizations such as the International Thriller Writers and the International Association of Crime Writers have played an important marketing role by putting the word out about my novels. With the rapid expansion of the internet, use of online resources such as blogs and author interview websites went a long way in promoting marketing efforts.
Video book trailers were produced for two of my novels, “Price of Justice and Cornered”, and posted to YouTube and other websites. Both novels have also been translated into foreign languages and are being promoted-marketed in Europe. All of my novels have been narrated into audiobooks which has contributed to increased sales.
Paid advertisements were placed in national magazines such as Mystery Scene and The Strand. “Price of Justice and Cornered” were displayed at several international book exhibits, including Book Expo America and the London Book Fair.
What are the results after you implemented your solution?
Sales have increased steadily, particularly with the recent release of “Rampage”, the second novel in the Detective Jason Scarsdale series.
